At Southrock Engineering, we won’t pretend we can compete on raw unit cost with high-volume overseas assembly vendors. What we offer is something different and for many customers, something far more valuable.

When you work with a large overseas PCB vendor, your project enters a queue. You fill out a form, upload your files, and wait. If something is wrong with your design…a component that’s obsolete, a layout that won’t survive automated assembly, a BOM that’s missing critical information…you might not find out until your boards arrive.
At Southrock, a technical team member personally reviews every project that comes through our door. During quoting, we check your part numbers for validity and availability, evaluate your PCB layout against our assembly parameters, and offer Design for Manufacturability (DFM) suggestions that can save you money and prevent problems before production ever begins. Before you make that comparison, it’s worth taking a closer look at what that overseas quote actually includes.
Here are a few questions worth asking:
- Are you getting the components you actually specified? Before comparing prices, check the BOM and component manufacturers included in the quote. A lower-cost assembly quote may not be based on the same components you specified. Southrock uses brand-name components rather than generic, no-name parts, so you’re comparing the cost of the product you actually designed—not an unspecified substitute.
- Is that price delivered, with tariffs included? Overseas shipments can be subject to import tariffs and customs duties that don’t show up in the original quote. What looks like a lower price can look very different by the time your order arrives. Southrock doesn’t charge tariffs on our US-based assembly — and we’re upfront about any component-related duties from the start.
- What happens after the order ships? Will they help you swap out a component? Troubleshoot an issue? Revise the design? Offer blanket orders with scheduled releases so you’re not sitting on excess inventory?

That’s not a knock on anyone. It’s an honest description of two different things being sold. Southrock’s value goes well beyond putting components on a board. You can also supply your own components and have Southrock handle the assembly, or use our team for component sourcing. For larger orders, blanket orders with scheduled partial shipments can help you get volume pricing without having to take delivery of everything at once.
If all you need is a commodity board in volume with a proven design, a large overseas house may work fine. But if your project needs anything beyond a straightforward assembly transaction, the math changes quickly.

Large overseas services are built for volume. They work best when your design is finalized, tested, and ready to run in the thousands. But what if you’re still in development? What if you need to swap a component, adjust a layout, or test a revision?
That’s where working local pays for itself. We build prototypes designed for real-world testing and we actively encourage a prototype run before moving to full production on any new or revised design. When the prototype checks out, we can reuse your solder stencil for the production run. When something needs to change, you’re talking to the same team that built it.
We’ve supported designs that have been in continuous evolution for decades. We understand what long-term product development actually looks like and we build working relationships to match.

No Minimums. No Waiting on Ocean Freight.
Large overseas operations are built around volume. Their model favors customers ordering thousands of units at a time. Minimum order quantities can be a real obstacle for smaller runs, R&D batches, or businesses that don’t want to tie up cash in inventory.
Southrock has no minimum order requirements. Need 10 boards? Done. Need 1,000? Also done. We also offer blanket orders with partial shipments. So, you can lock in pricing on a larger quantity and release product in batches as you need it. That kind of flexibility is hard to find with overseas suppliers.
You can also supply your own components if you prefer to manage sourcing yourself and have Southrock handle the assembly.
Because we’re in Mesa, Arizona, your order doesn’t need to cross an ocean to reach you. Local pickup is available, and we also offer courier service within the Phoenix Metro area. Faster delivery means faster time to market.

We’re transparent about our costs too. Southrock doesn’t charge tariffs on our US assembly. Component-related duties are passed through honestly. You’ll know upfront, not after the fact.

A note on component requirements: Southrock currently places components down to 0402, which is the minimum size our equipment can handle. We aren’t currently set up for BGA placement. In many applications, a traditional component package may be a viable alternative, and our engineering team can help evaluate the options during design or prototyping.
