Read this before you send your files halfway around the world. It’s not just about price. It’s about what happens when things get complicated.
If you’ve been searching for PCB assembly services, you’ve probably come across large overseas operations offering jaw-dropping prices. Sometimes these big box vendors quote just a few dollars per board and it’s tempting. We get it.
But before you send your design files halfway around the world, it’s worth asking: what are you actually signing up for? And what happens when you need something more than a basic transaction?
At Southrock Engineering, we won’t pretend we can compete on raw unit cost with high-volume overseas assembly vendors. What we offer is something different and for many customers, something far more valuable.
With Southrock, You’re Talking to an Engineer, Not a Ticket System
When you work with a large overseas PCB vendor, your project enters a queue. You fill out a form, upload your files, and wait. If something is wrong with your design…a component that’s obsolete, a layout that won’t survive automated assembly, a BOM that’s missing critical information…you might not find out until your boards arrive.
At Southrock, a technical team member personally reviews every project that comes through our door. During quoting, we check your part numbers for validity and availability, evaluate your PCB layout against our assembly parameters, and offer Design for Manufacturability (DFM) suggestions that can save you money and prevent problems before production ever begins. We’re proud that every customer knows exactly what to expect from the moment they reach out to us, whether the project goes perfectly as planned or there are obstacles along the way.
That kind of hands-on, technical communication is hard to get from a web portal. It’s what you get when real engineers are following your project at every step.
“Your Price Is Higher Than the Quote I Got Online”
Before you make that comparison, it’s worth taking a closer look at what that overseas quote actually includes.
Here are a few questions worth asking:
- What components are they using? Overseas assembly houses often substitute generic, no-name parts without telling you. At Southrock, we use brand-name components only. It’s not a small difference — component quality directly affects how your product performs and how long it lasts.
- Is that price delivered, with tariffs included? Overseas shipments can be subject to import tariffs and customs duties that don’t show up in the original quote. What looks like a lower price can look very different by the time your order arrives. Southrock doesn’t charge tariffs on our US-based assembly — and we’re upfront about any component-related duties from the start.
- What happens after the order ships? Will they help you swap out a component? Troubleshoot an issue? Revise the design? Offer blanket orders with scheduled releases so you’re not sitting on excess inventory?
“We can’t compete with China on price. And they can’t compete with us on everything else.”
That’s not a knock on anyone. It’s an honest description of two different things being sold. If all you need is a commodity board in volume with a proven design, a large overseas house may work fine. But if your project needs anything beyond that, the math changes quickly.
Prototypes That Actually Help You Iterate
Large overseas services are built for volume. They work best when your design is finalized, tested, and ready to run in the thousands. But what if you’re still in development? What if you need to swap a component, adjust a layout, or test a revision?
That’s where working local pays for itself. We build prototypes designed for real-world testing and we actively encourage a prototype run before moving to full production on any new or revised design. When the prototype checks out, we can reuse your solder stencil for the production run. When something needs to change, you’re talking to the same team that built it.
We’ve supported designs that have been in continuous evolution for decades. We understand what long-term product development actually looks like and we build working relationships to match.

No Minimums. No Waiting on Ocean Freight.
Large overseas operations are built around volume. Their model favors customers ordering thousands of units at a time. Minimum order quantities can be a real obstacle for smaller runs, R&D batches, or businesses that don’t want to tie up cash in inventory.
Southrock has no minimum order requirements. Need 10 boards? Done. Need 1,000? Also done. We also offer blanket orders with partial shipments. So, you can lock in pricing on a larger quantity and release product in batches as you need it. That kind of flexibility is hard to find with overseas suppliers.
And because we’re in Mesa, Arizona, your order doesn’t need to cross an ocean to reach you. Local pickup is available, and we also offer courier service within the Phoenix Metro area. Faster delivery means faster time to market.
What You See Is What You Get — On Price and Quality
Sticker price isn’t the whole story. Here’s a more complete picture of what to factor in when comparing quotes:
- Freight costs — ocean shipping adds both time and expense that can erode the price advantage on smaller orders
- Tariffs and import duties — components sourced globally may be subject to import tariffs regardless of where they’re assembled
- Component quality — generic or unverified parts can make it to your boards without your knowledge; we use brand-name components only
- Revision cycles — every design change means another international order, more lead time, more freight
- Communication — time zone differences and language barriers slow down problem-solving when you need answers fast
- Accountability — if something goes wrong, who’s responsible? How do you get it resolved?
We’re transparent about our costs too. Southrock doesn’t charge tariffs on our US assembly. Component-related duties are passed through honestly. You’ll know upfront, not after the fact.
Quality Standards You Can Actually Verify
Southrock assembles to IPC standards for both PCB and cable assembly. We’re UL certified and RoHS compliant and because we’re local, you’re welcome to come see our facility in person. We genuinely encourage it. How many overseas assembly houses invite you to walk their floor?
Our team serves customers in commercial, industrial, marine, telecom, automotive, energy, and lighting industries. These are sectors where quality isn’t optional and where a bad board can mean more than a bad day.

More Than Just Boards
Overseas PCB assembly services typically do one thing: assemble boards to your files. If your project involves custom cables, wire harnesses, box builds, reverse engineering of a legacy design, or any integration beyond bare board assembly, you’re likely managing multiple vendors.
Southrock handles all of it:
- Custom PCBA — SMT and through-hole assembly
- Custom cables and wire harnesses — built to IPC standards
- Box builds — fully integrated electronic systems, ready for deployment
- Prototyping — from concept to working hardware, quickly and accurately
- Reverse engineering — for outdated designs, or when an offshore vendor has your design and you’ve hit a wall
One team. One point of contact. Someone technical handling every detail, right here in Mesa, Arizona.

Southrock was built on long-term customer relationships. Our founder Peter has been designing PCBAs since the 1980s and our team still supports and assembles those same evolved designs today. That kind of continuity is the result of a team that takes product evolution, design revisions, and component sourcing seriously, including tracking down hard-to-find parts when legacy designs need them.
When you work with Southrock, you’re not just getting an assembly house. You’re getting an engineering partner who will still know your product inside and out years from now.
